From sawmill to space for performing arts, from workshop to exhibition hall. Many old industrial buildings of La Ribera have resurfaced after the decline as places for art and culture; a second life through dance, photography or theater. A new narrative for an old story.
New ideas must use old buildings – Jane Jacobs.

It is said that there is no better way to understand a neighborhood than getting to know its bars. A tour through the cafes of La Ribera by the hand of its owners, a vivid reflection of the evolution of the neighborhood and its inhabitants in the last decades.

The history of La Ribera de Deusto and Zorrotzaurre stands out for the large number of companies that have been located for many years in the island. Small workshops, medium-sized companies, and emblematic multinationals such as Relax, Artiach, Vicinay Cadenas or Toldos Goyoaga among others, found their headquarters in the area.

The great splendor of both neighborhoods arrived with industrialization, and the amount of people living and working there grew. Little by little, due to the crisis and changes in their activities, the companies moved to other places transforming the panorama completely. The workshops disappeared leaving empty or underused spaces and little traveled streets.

Some were born in La Ribera and others arrived later. There are those who still live in the neighborhood and who no longer do so. They all share their memories and experiences of this place to help build the landscape of what it once was and what it is still today for them. A portrait of the neighborhood through its inhabitants.
